A New Way to Fight Homelessness: Shared Living

To get away from the institutionalization of group homes and the nonpermanent nature of homeless shelters, PHN is introducing a “Shared Living” model, which offers survivors of human trafficking and homeless Veterans an opportunity to live in a comfortable home that is owned or leased by a Shared Living Provider (SLP).

For the Veteran program, the SLP is another Veteran, someone who understands the difficulties of navigating civilian life after service.

SLPs are paid individuals who want to open their homes to those in need. PHN works with the SLPs to ensure they are fully trained, capable, and compliant with Federal and State guidelines and are completely prepared to provide housing and other support to victims of human trafficking and homeless Veterans.

How PHN Will Accomplish Its Mission:

Our mission is backed by over 30 years of staff education and experience in the Human Services field and by strong partnerships with affiliate and other organizations.

To combat human trafficking, PHN has cultivated partnerships with local judiciaries, community organizations, and local politicians to establish a statewide coalition to discuss strategies to fight the issue and help survivors regain control of their lives.

Utilizing the Shared Living model (SLP) to support homeless Veterans will provide the Veterans Administration an additional option for housing placement. This model provides an individualized approach to housing assistance, allowing the Veteran to establish their needs and support as they see fit.

PHN will strive to recruit SLPs who are also Veterans to host a homeless Veteran in their home. The Veteran SLP will receive compensation to provide this support by developing contracts for residential services with the Veterans Administration.

PHN has recruited staff and board members that provide expertise in the Shared Living Model, Veterans services, and Human Trafficking.

 Our Accomplishments and Future Goals:

Since PHN realigned its mission and vision, the organization has been successful in recruiting a new board of directors and appointing an Executive Director.

PHN has established a contract for services with the Veterans Administration to support homeless Veterans, providing an additional option for home placement.

PHN staff has created a robust network of supportive organizations and representatives as they create the statewide collaborative and protocols to combat human trafficking.
